A brief summary of my sailing life journey so far…
9 years ago, I sailed for the first time across the Atlantic as a crew. I had no idea about anything sailing. I learned how (and how not) to be amateur crew on sailboats. Nevertheless, I LOVED it all.
8 years ago, I organized my first sailing trip (in Greece). Kitesurf & Sailing Flotilla to create crewing opportunities I couldn't find elsewhere. I got superenergized about seeing and meeting others as excited about nature exploration as I was. I also sailed across the Atlantic Atlantic for the third time.
7 years ago, I published some tips on being volunteer yacht crew across the Atlantic, which turned into the book Ocean Nomad. The initial 20-pager turned into 400 pages of stories and advice on happy, safe, and meaningful sailing the Atlantic as a volunteer crew member. +2800 copies sold so far :). Thank you for all the beautiful reviews.
6 Years ago, I got my captain's License (yacht master Offshore), to be able to be both amateur and professional crew, but above all to take you sailing and create the adventure and eco vibe on board I couldn't find elsewhere. And to gain a bit more confidence in my sailing and captain skills. Thank you all who joined on one of the sailing trips so far… (A current sailing opportunity is open for crew recruitment!)
And the journey continued…
5 years ago, I took care of a boat for a season to experience liveaboard life as a captain, take people sailing, and learn more about the importance of community and a value-sharing support network. And time, and money, and skills, and attitude, and good amateur crew (not necessarily sailing experience).
4 years ago I, together with other beautiful ocean souls, launched the Ocean Nomad membership network to be able to focus and do better on facilitating personalized support, resources, and connections on sailing the world with impact.
3 years ago, I organized the first offshore sailing event on the beautiful classic SV Twister. Sailing offshore requires our deepest respect for the ocean and serious preparation for a happy, safe, and meaningful experience. It went so well, so safe, happy, and energetic because of the beautiful crew mix on board.
2 years ago, we took it one step further. With Ocean Nomads in collaboration with Twister sailing we organized a sailing expedition across the Atlantic Ocean (And Caribbean Sea!) and back across the Ocean! We made a film about.
+40.000 Nautical Miles, and 5 Ocean crossings later…
I created the Ocean Nomads Crew Course to help transition aspiring ocean lifestyle designers from beginner to knowledgeable, confident, and eco-conscious crew members, ready to embark on your sailing adventure worldwide supported by a kind ocean community at every step of the way. All my tips on a decade of travelling by sail condensed in a pack.
WHAT'S NEXT?
This year, I just submitted the draft of my next book to a publisher. It's my book Ocean Nomad in a new edition and in German. English will follow. AND I put my skipper hat on again! With a couple of sailing vessels, we navigate the Greek coast and islands! It's where I organized my very first sailing charter. But this time we go further, longer and with 4 vessels. It's not too late to apply for a spot.
With Ocean Nomads we are NOW finalizing the epic crew team! And you can join! Trip Info.
Sail Greece with me and a bunch of selected like-minded ocean nomads this October. We are sailing a one-way route with a couple of sailing vessels that we rent. In 11 Days / 10 Nights we sail, drop anchor, explore, share stories and skills, powered by wind and the energy of like minded ocean nomads on board. A hands-on ocean adventure discovering ways to live and travel more simple, wild, and pure. And sailing into new places is just magical.
This is THE opportunity to meet your Ocean Nomads seafaring family (in real life), accelerate and enhance your ocean-nomad lifestyle, and experience beautiful Greece and all that comes with it together! Priority Access and big discounts for OceanNomads members and Sailboat Travel Crew Course students. ❤️
This trip is perfect if you don't want to spend weeks searching for a happy, safe and meaningful ride, a value-sharing crew team, assessing safety, and getting experience.
My wish is for you to see for yourself how beautiful the ocean is! And hopefully ignite the superpower within you to take steps into a more conscious and perhaps nomadic life in or near or for the sea, and give back to the ocean, our playground, our home, our life. The pursuit of a healthy ocean and lifestyle are one and the same. If you ever dreamed about exploring the sailing lifestyle and don't want to figure it all out by yourself or spend lots of time finding a value-sharing vessel, this is for you. Be fast, more than 2/3rd of the spots are taken. We aim to have the crew team complete it as soon as possible and close the laptops to live at the next level, minimally in tune with nature. This summer I go on a 850 thru-hike with my dog Wingo:).

Why I am so stoked to organize an Ocean Nomads adventure again AND skipper myself.
When I started looking into ocean travel by sail nine years ago now, I had no idea about sailing, and I didn’t have connections in sailing either. I struggled to find out how to get into travelling by sail, safely, with little budget and experience, and as I went on I struggled finding ‘my kind’ of people, those purpose-driven wild souls looking for adventure and making a positive impact.
For a few years, I lived more at sea than land, ‘crewing/hitchhiking’ on about 100 different boats. These were good, bad, and priceless experiences. You can read more blogs about ‘travelling by sail‘ here on this blog, check out my book Ocean Nomad, or enroll in the Ocean EcoExplorer Crew Course, where I share all my tips and tools on sailboat travel, eco-friendly, and adventure-style, aimed at the ambitious purpose driven novice sailor. If I learned one thing, the people make the experience happy, safe, and meaningful!
Sailing requires deep respect for the ocean, and careful preparation and crew and boat selection. As I couldn’t find my tribe and value-matching (Like vegetarian, purpose-driven, adventure-minded, safe, male/female balanced) vessels, I created what’s now the Ocean Nomads network, a community of (aspiring) adventure and impact-driven sailing nomads. With Ocean Nomads, we connect ocean people, vessels, projects, and environmental action to facilitate sailboat travel, adventure, impact, and a nomadic and ocean-conscious way of life. There are currently +80 vessels and hundreds of nomads in the network teaming up for ocean adventure and supporting each other along the way. It's really cool to see how many connections and adventurers have come out of it so far. But what is definitely most exciting and energizing is taking people into the big blue! So here we go :)
Ambitious adventure sailing crew wanted!
Discover what it feels like to wake up at sea, breathe the ocean air, have the wind in your hair, live simple and resourceful, and be eye to eye with dolphins. Day in, day out… Of course, the most fast-track ocean nomad lifestyle acceleration is joining an ocean adventure experience, where you spend time with other ocean adventurers with similar dreams and missions of creating a more conscious and nomadic lifestyle on the sea.
The Ocean Nomads trips connect people to each other and to the sea. Nothing brings people together like actually bringing people together. And nothing triggers more than actual experience. We add nature and adventure into the mix, and we have a recipe for creating a big dose of positive energy and accelerating change for the common good. We provide ocean adventure and encourage low-impact travel by sail.
By uniting you, your experiences, connections and stories, at sea, we can reach further, help, do more, and be more. We are at the forefront of what’s happening. And we can do a lot to make a positive impact. We live up to the Ocean Nomads’ slow sailing philosophy. We strive for an onboard environment that inspires adventure and play, strongly emphasising hands-on action, health, simplicity, local, teamwork, skill sharing, and environmental consciousness.
To reach for the stars, we must surround ourselves with like-minded entrepreneurial salty souls, share knowledge, and inspire and cheer each other on. So much more is possible if we join forces on our journeys. The best is going on a journey together! I wish for you to see for yourself how beautiful the ocean is!
And hopefully ignite the superpower within you to take steps into a conscious nomadic life in or near the sea, and give back to the ocean, our playground, our home, our life. The pursuit of a healthy ocean and lifestyle are one and the same.

Though the upcoming trip with organize is priced far below the average charter, I also realize that a voyage like this is not within the financial or timing reach of everyone. Explore the Ocean Explorer Course for a DIY way to make those dreams real at your own pace.
I hope to see you there! I'll offer personalized support to make those ocean sailing and nomad lifestyle dreams real.
Now is the time!

SEA you in Greece?
Hello Suzanne, That’s a very interesting read and probably took a lot of hours in preparation. I throughly enjoyed it. And thank you for the pleasure.
I noticed that the references to Ocean Nomads sight have been crossed out in several places. Is there a reason for this ? Are you starting a new web sight for captains to contact crew ext or should I consider re joining Ocean Nomads again. I am finding it difficult to attract people to sail with me for the pleasure of the journey, and life afloat. It seems that there are a lot of people who are really using sail boats as a means to get to another destination regardless of the way they treat the vessel, and its equipment , the captain and of the efficiency of the natural elements. Just put on the engine rather than sail slowly or go to windward. Both things I actually enjoy but am disappointed by the apathy and lack of effort by some people who are definitely not sailors that I have met and sailed with from various other sailing sights.. Even after saying how enthusiastic they are about doing the trip .
Consequently I trying to find a morel reliable sailing organisation to contact crew on and was thinking about rejoining Ocean Nomads.
I look forward to hearing from you at your convenience,
Best wishes from Kinetic and Keith at anchor in Horta, Fail, Azores
Hey Keith! How lovely to hear from you again! Thank you for you kind comment. The references crossed out meant a typo in the URL. I now fixed it I think :) The Ocean Nomads community is still thriving! And we have quite some driven crew members ready to jump on an adventure and who are all about going with the elements. Al,so now the Ocean Nomads crew course is out, crew members are better prepared than ever :). I hope! It’s a follow-up from my book.
Great you consider to re-join us! It’ll be a pleasure.
I’ll email you a special invite link. Once an Ocean Nomads founding member, always one :)
Enjoy Horta and wish you well with the next leg of the trip!
Suzanne
The blog is hard to read. Increasing the point size would help.
Thanks for the tip! Fixed :)
