I’m writing this sitting under a palm tree surrounded by dromedaries, cows, the sea and my dog Wingo who’s fishing (not catching)… I started and ended 2024 on African soil, feeling ALIVE :). It just feels good to be here. It’s adventurous, affordable, wild, random, calm, peaceful, spacious, and for those wondering, safe! And also, living in the van with a dog, there are only so many places where you can go to when winter kicks in, and you want to live outdoors.

Somehow 2024 was a year of big milestones: a new booka film, a WILD 850 km hike across the Pyrenees, and an ocean nomads sailing fleet in Greece. The goals weren’t even set a year ago. From idea to realization so much happened spontaneous and in flow.

Remember, In nature, the new year begins in spring. Winter is for slowing down, rest and reflection. So if you don’t feel the 2025 reset rush and renewal, relax, you are in tune with nature.

That said, a little bit of reflection is always good. To feel if life is going where we want it go.

Looking back, my biggest treasures aren’t the grand milestones but the smallest, simplest joys while working towared the bigger adventures. The little things found in living a life connected to nature, whether I’m traveling in my van, hiking, camping or sailing the seas. Just a few priceless realizations and treasures of 2024:

  • Legs that carried me across the Pyrenees.
  • Mum-made frangipani shorts that still fit after a decade of adventures.
  • Six month slow traveling through Morocco, to really get a sense of place.
  • My tiny house on wheels—still rolling strong after 5 years being the main basecamp!
  • A pile of cilantro on a Moroccan frisbee sandwich.
  • The pricelessness of cooking a warm meal or tea in the wild
  • Showering in wild hot springs, rivers, or the ocean.
  • Waking up to my own rhythm, free from alarms or schedules.
  • Stepping out of the van, barefoot, into random wild places.
  • Finding water when I need it

It’s these small, raw, real moments that make you feel SO grateful and ALIVE and remind me why I choose to live this in this nomadic way in nature.

Here’s a little recap of 2024 and exciting things, tips and tales ahead to help create a slow travel lifestyle in tune with nature..

May it serve as an encouragement to you to start today, and to help you realize your slow travel lifestyle dreams that may not be far away…

2024 Adventure Highlights

I did my first ever solo long distance hike

Early this year I started becoming excited about doing a long solo long distance hike with Wingo. And this summer I hiked across the Pyrenees from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea, 850km on the GR11 Transpirenaica.

Simple, wild, and free. And for a change, away from the sea. The GR11 wasn’t just about hiking. It was about living fully, carrying everything I needed on my back. Nothing more and nothing less. And seeing the world differently.

I hiked parts with my dog Wingo, with friends, and with my partner Jonte. But the biggest part alone in solitude. It’s very special to be on your own in the wild and getting at ease with it all. In tune with my own and nature’s rhythm. And exploring the world in a different way. For me, This wasn’t about escaping, it was about stepping deeper into nature. Away from the noise, pollution and distractions of daily life. I already live a life quite close to nature. Navigating coastlines by campervan or by sail. But this was next level. It was an opportunity to immerse myself more into the wild. 50 days of navigating mountain passes, foraging berries and sleeping under the stars. An adventure I wanted to do for me.

Hiking this trail pushed me in ways I never expected. What a trail and treasure hunt! Rough, tough, brutal and beautiful! This was probably the most mental and physical challenging but also most rewarding adventure of my life. 50 days of calling the trail my home and a mountain of memorable moments richer.

Published a new book, with a publisher!

Salz auf der Haut. A travel guide for the ocean! If you are curious to explore the seas by sailboat, live the sailing lifestyle, and learn by doing, here are the tips and tricks, and some stories and photos from my travels. Based on my experience of travelling the oceans by sail as crew, skipper and trip organizer.

In 2017, I published Ocean Nomad, which mainly focused on Sailing as a crew across the Atlantic. A while ago, I got approached by the German publisher Delius Klasing that they would like to translate Ocean Nomad into German. Instead, we made a fresh new edition, applicable to travelling by sailboat as crew anywhere in the world. And with updates and learnings from my ocean adventures and nomad life since.

Not having Wi-Fi in Morocco last winter made me finalize the manuscript, which is currently being translated as I write this. I’m very excited to bring this to you and have a new tool out to dip your toes into travelling by sailboat.

In the podcast Meilen und Zeilen I talk about the book, travelling by sailboat, nomadlife & ocean nomads.

You can buy the book here.

Organized the biggest Ocean Nomads gathering ever

Ocean Nomads was born from the drive to connect people to the ocean, and fellow outdoor people living nature and ocean minded lifestyles. We can never have enough nature time in our lives. And many of us need more. Add adventure to that and we feel most alive.

So it was time to organize another trip!

What a gathering: the Ocean Nomads fleet in Greece. 11 Days, 4 vessels and 34 beautiful ocean adventure people sailing from the Ionion Sea to Athens via the Corinth channel. And I put my captain hat on again.

It went well. The skippering and the trip. And I’m so grateful for that. We put lots of love and prepping in this trip. But like with most adventures there are many variables you can’t plan for. It’s what makes an adventure an adventure. But we did it and it turned out the happy, healthy, safe and meaningful event, as we aimed for. From “champagne” sailing to +30 knots gusts, the weather gods were mostly with us🌬️ And what a treat, to explore Greece in October! Shorts (made by mum ) are the dresscode, the sea is warm, and pomegranate season is on.

But of course it’s the people who made the trip! I’m super proud of having a team who didn’t settle for anything less than making this a success! And for all the positive, energetic inspiring ocean nomads joining. So many memorable moments, connections & experiences richer. Thank you to all who took part.

It has been captured on film by the one and only Jonatan Bjorkman.

And new Sailing Adventure Trips are already on the agenda that you can join.

The biggest highlights: the beauty of the simple moments

Looking back, my biggest highlights aren’t the grand milestones but the smallest, simplest joys while working on the big things. The little things found in living a life connected to nature, whether I’m traveling in my van, hiking, camping or sailing the seas.

Some of the simple 2024 things I treasure:

  • Legs that carried me across the Pyrenees.
  • Mum-made frangipani shorts that still fit after a decade of adventures.
  • Six month slow traveling through Morocco, to really get a sense of place.
  • My tiny house on wheels—still rolling strong after 5 years being the main basecamp!
  • A pile of cilantro on a Moroccan frisbee sandwich.
  • The wisdom and grounding of Ayurveda.
  • The pricelessness of cooking a warm meal or tea in the wild
  • Showering in wild hot springs, rivers, or the ocean.
  • Foraging wild fruits and seaweed. Superpowers!
  • Waking up to my own rhythm, free from alarms or schedules.
  • Stepping out of the van, barefoot, into random wild places.
  • Nights spent sleeping under the stars.
  • Adventuring with 34 Ocean Nomads from across the globe.
  • Monday morning surf sessions, the waves all to ourselves.
  • Healthy, supportive family and friends who keep my heart full.
  • Cuddling my dog, Wingo, my constant source of unconditional love.
  • Finding water when I need it
  • Friends who embrace the wildness of this lifestyle and join me for the ride.
  • Strangers whose kindness and curiosity make my heart warm
  • Fixing tents, car roofs, and whatever else life throws my way.
  • A healthy body and curious mind.
  • Laughing, loving, and living with Jonte and Wingo by my side.

These moments are my treasures: the barefoot days, the seaweed and spice mix parties, the campfire tajines. They’re what make this lifestyle so rich. They’re the connection, freedom, and adventure I live for.

Life isn’t about ticking boxes or chasing big milestones. It’s about these small, raw, real moments that remind me why I choose to live this way.

So grateful for it all. This year again I spent more time outdoors than indoors and it’s a trend I love to continue.

2025 Wildfullness

Be wildful you all!

It makes you feel curious, healthy and alive!

Be close to nature. Get out there and explore. It puts you in awe and oh, makes you aware about the world, and helps to plot your course and act accordingly. Go slow, without a tight schedule so you can follow the weather and feelings and unforeseen. Surround yourself with people who lift you up and live your desired life. You are not too old, too young, too rich, too poor to choose a simple life. Health is the real wealth. Stay true to yourself and your values. Don’t take anything or anyone for granted. Never make assumptions. Breathe the fresh air. Be more outdoors than indoors. Be kind to you and to others. Focus on end goals and trust and embrace the journey.

Here’s to another year of wildness, of stepping out of comfort zones, of connecting deeper with nature and each other while living slow. And here’s to the people who make it all so worthwhile—Ocean Nomads, friends, family, and strangers who become like family.

Let’s keep creating ripples of adventure, kindness, and connection.

Thank you for following along. I wish you an adventurous and wildful 2025!

With Love, Suzanne
