We are parked in a forest!
That is quite something after months being in sand and desert. The air is fresh, the birds are singing, i foraged for tea leaves🙃 and there is 0 wind.
How special the simple things can be 🥰 The grass couldn’t be greener 🥳 And, there are monkeys! 🙊 Did you spot them? 🐒

More than 5 months in Morocco & Western Sahara and I’m still not ready to leave. I’m really happy we took so much time to live the place. And that I created a slow travel lifestyle in a way that I can do that. And that I met someone who is as flexible and prioritises adventure and nature 🕺🏼🐕 It’s not a big bank account that allows this (long term travel is mostly wayyy cheaper than short trips). But a certain set of decisions, mindset, resourcefulness, and knowing that what gives me most superpowers is this: Just being in nature.
And let’s not forget: a passport! A privileged document that for many nationalities is a very inaccessible thing on its own.
As well as power🔌

Parking under the trees also made the battery empty for the first time 🙊 So the phone goes off soon, the signal is weak anyways, and its embracing life as nature provides. For now without power, closing the screens, but 100% in nature and a campfire planned for the evening entertainment 🥰 and for cooking 🍳 and that’s the whole point of a slow travel lifestyle in the first place, just BEing ✨

Nomadlife comes with its own set of challenges. Every day there is a surprise element 🤪

It’s still worth it.

A typical but also not so typical day.

It takes time, timing, inspector gadgetting, a good weather forecast, sand everywhere, but then oh then the treasures are found 🙏✨🙃

Typical days also involve getting sandblasted, having car trouble, not having signal when you want to work, no fresh produce, and day to day things that just all take longer with nomadlife.

But then, the rewards like these are extra special and appreciated 🥰

Water appreciation post 💦💙🙏

The only thing I was seeing for a longg time was desert and dryness and desert. For 100s of KMs. Very beautiful and so different from my usual ocean sightings. The search for water remains a constant. For drinking, play, peace & happiness. You see a river on google maps but most of them are dry. They haven’t had rain here in 2 years. And many people live here. They just make it work. Water can be found. It’s mostly filling jugs for drinking and being resourceful.

But then oh then…

We drove down into the wadi and we found quite a water stream. The first one of the year. What a party! And very unexpected. You couldn’t see it from the main road. Some rivers are coming together south of the high atlas and brings the richness of water into peoples lives, and ours🥰🐕💙

And we found a little spot ⚓️ right on the waterfront🙃🍀 We stayed a few days. The luxury of slow travel.

Wingo 🐕 LOVES it 🥰 He couldn’t care less about the goats. Full dedication to the moment 💫

It’s the basic simple things that bring so much joy.

Water. Nature. A peaceful place to park. A happy doggy. And sweet kind people passing by. That’s wealth for me. And the depth of appreciation I sometimes can have for it. I hope I never loose that.

♻️Eco Travel Tip!💦 Water is life! If there’s only one thing I’d recommend you travel with it’s a waterfilter. Whether you are hiking, sailing or vanlifing there’s a suitable option out there. I tried out many and my favourite for years is @Maunawai. A small family bizz that makes filters of all kinds that also brings back life into to water😋 They have a hiking edition but also a small one to fix in the van. I’ve been using the same one for almost a year and it still turns any water into yummy healthy water. Like from this river 🙏💙 and you never have to buy water and create waste.

Did you know that pretty much all bamboo toothbrushes have plastic bristles (do tag brands that don’t)?

Here’s a simple local discovery for another step into zero-waste living: Miswak ✨

In Morocco, the traditional toothbrush is known as a miswak. It’s a natural alternative to the modern toothbrush and made from the twigs of the arak tree. The use of miswak is an ancient practice, that made it to modern times🙏

Why try?

🌱No need for toothpaste! the bristles work really well and the miswak is a natural antiseptic
🌱It’s lightweight. Perfect in the nomadkit. I’ll bring one on my next thruhike.
🌱It’s natural. No chemicals. No brush or tube to throw ‘away’. You dont create any waste.
🌱The investment: 1 or 2 dirham depending on the size. That’s 0.10 - 0.20 cents.

While in other parts of the world, I’ve found dozens of toothbrushes in nature, here, I have found 0. 🙏

Here we are in the desert parked right next to a funky hotspring. The sun is setting. Dinner is being made. The camels just passed by to say hi. And it’s new moon which means a spectacular night sky 🌌🙃🙏

It takes time, timing, inspector gadgetting, driving skills, a good weather forecast, sand everywhere, but then oh then the nature treasures are found 🙏✨🙃

Wingo keeps me sane, sharp, and superpowered 🙏 And I believe he couldn’t be much healthier and happier either, living more outdoor than indoors and new lands to explore pretty much every day.

It makes the nomadlife logistics sometimes more challenging and limiting but so worth it. A few limitations to the freedom lifestyle actually makes it easier too☺️

For those who wonder, travelling with him 🐕 here in Morocco & Western Sahara has been easy and really nice for him. It’s one big exploration zone and dogs are allowed everywhere 🥳 The stray dogs are supersweet and not to worry about. I wish I could take them all 🥰 And he gets along well with the dromedaris😁🐪🥳

I’ve sailed, SUPped, hiked, kayaked and vanlifed with him.

I’m now considering doing a serious long hike with him. Just me and Wingo.

Crossing tracks with nomads we crossed tracks before sharing outdoor cinema’s, kite & stories.

Lots of Harira Soup & Mezeme bread during Ramadan. Super yummy, healthygg and going out for dinner won’t break the budget. 75 cents for a home cooked meal 🙏

But also, not so much surf. Not so much signal. Car struggles. Visa bureaucratics. Windy days. Sand storms. Becoming an expert in gearboxes (perks of having an old car. Things are fixable 🛠️✌️)Challenges living with 3 on 6m2. Sand everywhere. All. The. Time. But it’s so worth it🥰

It took a few weeks of sailing⛵️, a few days of hiking🏕️💃… but we made it to watercress paradise 🥳😋 a superfood abundance playground. I never saw so much watercress in my life. And with a bit of a greenery deficiency going on, what a treat!🍰

Finding food and fruit in the wild makes me sooo happy. Especially when you haven’t eaten fresh greens for a while on a long sail or trail, or sahara park-up (where I write this from 🏜️)

A few forage tips:

Join us hiking across the country of Dominica on the Waitukubuli National Trail. A long distance trail in the tropics no one knew if it was possible to still hike the full trail after Hurricane Maria in 2017.

Veggie trail feasting with a view 🥳
Trail food! It has to be easy 🍃, nurturing 🌱, lightweight 🎒, calorie-rich 🥑, available 🌎, affordable 💵, and veggie 🥕, for me.
And stoveless, this trail 🔥❌.

My expectations on finding wild fruit 🌴 on a tropical jungle hike and yummy local meals were high (and delivered 😁). Though here we were in the wild , enjoying a picnic 🧺 with food from the pack 🎒. Before we started the trail, we went to town for some basic supplies unlikely to find anywhere else. Like wraps, almond butter, oats, and dried fruit. This meal was a little less wild but oh so yummy 😋! Not because of what I ate…

What I learned in my Ayurveda studies 📚 is that it’s as important (if not more!) HOW you eat (& the happiness it’s prepared with 😊), and with WHO (good vibes 🤗), as WHAT you actually eat.

Why? It matters how we process and digest the food 🔄. And accordingly are superpowered 🦸‍♀️ for the next section. 🦶

WHAT I’m eating here: Wrap + almond butter + tomato 🍅 + watercress + seasalt + DESSERT :) a wild raspberry for dessert, spotted from full presence from the picnic spot :). Funky combination and not 100 % pure but the scenery makes up for it.

HOW I’m eating it:) Good view + good company + with a fresh water swim awaiting (and a serious uphill climb after ⛰️)
I have a lot more to say and study on the topic of veggie eating and eating healthy on trails, sails, and expeditions. But the night market is ON and I’m going to eat the yummy local veggie soup 🍜, with other happy travel people, that the food stall lady has been preparing for hours now. Writing this, my digestive fire already starts anticipating 🔥 :)
